Chapter 20

Milo

Milo couldn't believe that Dusty had accepted his invitation for a date. For the rest of the fair, his heart was light and his smile was gorgeous. His brother still tried to get details out of him during the fair but he was having none of it.

When the fair was done by mid-afternoon, Milo put away his things and helped Jared pack as well.

“Okay, now you have to spill,” Jared insisted as they packed their bins.

Milo wasn't sure where to begin so decided to just throw it out there. “I'm seeing Dusty tonight.”

“I knew it,” Jared exclaimed, staring at him. “The moment I saw that picture, it was obvious. And the way you two looked at each other, you so had chemistry. You're crushing on him?”

“I'm definitely crushing on him. Oh, he's so strong and silent... Although he was a bit talkative today, which was nice. Maybe he needs someone to help him out of his shell, too?” Milo was excited to help Dusty overcome his own fears.

Jared frowned. “He was being professional when you were working with him, right...?”

“Nothing but professional,” Milo nodded. “Even when... I wasn't. I said some pretty embarrassing things...”

“You only just broke up. Are you sure this is the right thing to do?”

“Who knows? But I'm going with it. I don't think there has to be a certain amount of time between boyfriends. I'm not grieving over that relationship. I'm already feeling freer than ever, and with Dusty...”

Jared still looked concerned as they lugged their boxes from the church and into their vehicles. “I just don't want you getting hurt again.”

“I know better than to think that every guy is going to be like Vincent...” Despite the betrayal, Milo was still optimistic about dating. He still believed that there were just and loyal guys out there. There would be a man that would love and be with only him.

Maybe Dusty was the one. It scared him to be thinking about his future—their future—so soon but he couldn't help it. Dusty called to him and Milo wanted to learn more about this mysterious man.

“I'll be careful, I promise,” Milo murmured as he closed the trunk.

Jared sighed gently and leaned in to hug him. “I'm glad you still have faith.”

“Nothing can keep me down,” Milo chuckled as he hugged him back. “Go on now. I've got a date to get ready for.”

“It's not for hours!”

“I still have lots to do!” Milo retorted as he walked around to the driver's side. “See you later.”

Once he was in the car, he started it and waved to his brother. Then, he turned the music up loud and sang his heart out all the way home, his spirits high.

***

The rest of the day crawled by as Milo prepared for the date. He made sure the house was nice and tidy, in case they came back to it afterward. The desire to be embraced and taken by Dusty again was such a slow burn that was almost painful.

Once the house was clean, he took his time getting himself ready as well.
